The 30th Annual State of Maine Sportsman’s Show on April 2-4 at the Augusta Civic Center includes a photography contest that draws hundreds of entries.
This is the 14th Annual Contest and offers five categories:
The First Category is Color Photography of Wildlife and includes seven classes: 1. Fish, 2. Large Mammals (moose, elk, caribou, deer, bear, mountain lion, whales, etc.) 3. Small Mammals (fox, mink, muskrat, skunks, raccoon, coyote, bobcat, woodchucks, etc.) 4. Birds of Prey, 5. Songbirds, 6. Birds (all others) and 7. Other Wildlife.
The Second Category is People in the Outdoors and must have scenes of fishing, hunting, hiking, snowmobiling, skiing, etc., and the category includes color and black-and-white photography.
Third is Landscapes or Scenery and is open to color and black and white. Here, people or wildlife can be in the photo, but the emphasis is on the overall landscape or scene.
Fourth is Macro and open to color only. Macro or close-up lenses must be used for full-frame shots of subjects such as bees, butterflies, flowers, etc.
Fifth is Manipulated, Altered or Enhanced, and all photos that fall into this group will be judged in this category – regardless of subject matter.
The entry fee for each photo is $3. Ribbons will be awarded in the categories outlined above and will be judged on the following criteria: 1) technical merit (sharpness, proper exposure, composition and lighting) and 2) aesthetic value (color, impact, creativity and uniqueness).
In all classes, ribbons will be awarded as follows: Blue for First Place, Red for Second Place, Yellow for Third Place and White for Honorable Mention. Judges need not award all ribbons in a category.
One entry will be awarded for Best of Show, and the winner will receive a ribbon and trophy. A Sportsman’s Choice will also be selected, voted on by the general public attending the show. A trophy will be awarded. The decision of the judges is final.
There is no requirement for matting or framing. All entries will be hung on display walls. If no suitable hanger exists on the photo, then thumbtacks will be put in each corner.
Entries can be delivered to the show management at the Civic Center, Thursday, April 1 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., and Friday, April 2, from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m.
Entries will be given a number and put on display. The person delivering will be given a receipt for the entry. Any names or markings on the entry must be covered with tape.
All entries must be left in place until 4:30 p.m., Sunday, April 4. Those that aren’t picked up will be taken to the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, 205 Church Hill Road, Augusta, ME 04330. If you leave a proper shipping container with appropriate postage, SAM will send it back.
